Have you ever wondered about where this or that got its name, where we get this or that practice? I do all the time. Love finding out too!
Take Arby’s for instance, Alison loves their pork belly sandwich and I enjoy their horsey sauce, their name isn’t a phonetic spelling of R B standing for Roast Beef, much as I like the idea. It in fact stands for Raffel Brother’s the guys who originally founded the chain. McDonald’s, founded by Ray Kroc, is a reference to the restaurants established by the McDonald’s brother’s who had a restaurant that Ray Kroc took international.
Ever wonder about the Brits and their use of blimey? Turns out it’s short for, “May God blind me”. a pretty strong, and impious oath. As a kid I wondered about the use of “gadzooks” in comic books. It seemed like a nonsense word and was kind of fun to say. Turns out it means “God’s Hooks” standing for the nails that held Christ to the cross.
My wonder about these things has led me to learn about the actual origins of some businesses. I have also come to know that, no matter what I thought about certain “safe” words as a child, I don’t use them today and recognize them for what they are.
This is one of the things our wonder is meant to do. Get us to go explore, either physically in the world, or by diving in to books and the internet to research and learn. Conversations with friends, family and acquaintances all help with this process. The process of learning that allows us to learn, not just from books, articles and research, but from the people we associate with. Feedback being an important aspect of what is provided.
